GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION:
This page outlines the minimum requirements for life safety and property protection against fire, explosions, or other hazardous conditions, as well as safety for firefighters and emergency responders during emergencies. These standards are based on nationally recognized best practices.
WATER SUPPLY (Fire Flow):
Hydrant Distance: Residential structures located more than 1,000 feet from a certified hydrant must have a fire-suppression water supply.
Fire Flow Area Calculation: The total occupiable space under the roof deck, including garages, bonus rooms, basements, and exterior porches/patios, is used to determine fire flow requirements. Building plans may be required to verify square footage.
Dwellings Over 3,600 SF: A fire suppression water supply is mandatory for structures exceeding 3,600 square feet.

GATES ACROSS APPARATUS ACCESS:

HOME KNOXBOX PROGRAM:
The Middleton and Star Fire Districts offer a Home KnoxBox program for single-family residences. This program allows first responders to gain quick access during emergencies. For more information, contact the Fire Code Official.

Follow these steps to submit your application and plans:
1. Download and complete the Construction Permit Single-Family Application.
2. Upload the following documents in PDF format:
Once you have submitted a permit using the Fire District Permit Portal, you can track your progress. Please allow 10-15 business days for the review to be completed.
