GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION:
The purpose of this page is to establish the minimum requirements consistent with nationally recognized good practice for providing a reasonable level of life safety and property protection from the hazards of fire, explosion, or dangerous conditions in new and existing buildings, structures, and premises, and to provide a reasonable level of safety to firefighters and emergency responders during emergency operations.
WATER SUPPLY (Fire Flow):
If the residential structure is more than 1000 ft. from a certified hydrant, a water supply is required.
Water Supply for Fire Suppression Fire flow square footage is determined by total occupiable space under the roof deck, including garages, bonus rooms, basements, and exterior porches/patios. (Building plans may be required for review to calculate the actual square footage).
Dwellings over 3,600 SF are required to have an approved fire suppression water supply.
APPARATUS ACCESS:
Fire apparatus access roads shall have an unobstructed width of not less than 20 feet, exclusive of shoulders, with an unobstructed vertical clearance of not less than 13 feet 6 inches. The drivable surface shall be capable of supporting the imposed load of fire apparatus weighing at least 75,000 pounds. Access roads over 150 ft. from the public roadway will require a turn-around.

GATES ACROSS APPARATUS ACCESS:
If you plan on having a gate across an apparatus access, additional requirements will apply. See Fire District Gates and Barriers in Document Download.
HOME KNOXBOX PROGRAM:
The Middleton and Star Fire District offer a Home Knoxbox program for single-family residential structures. Knoxbox will help first responders gain access in an emergency. For more information, contact the Fire Code Official.
